Adaptive Facades Network

Project no.: TU1403
Project website: http://tu1403.eu/

Project description:

Adaptive facades are an important tool for increasing the energy efficiency of buildings in order to achieve the goals set out in the EU Energy Efficiency Directive. Currently, fa?ade systems are being developed, the functionality of which can be changed in relation to time and environmental conditions: facades can become conductive to solar thermal radiation when the building needs to be heated, to visible light when indoor lighting is needed, during the summer their solar heat transmittance can be reduced in order to avoid overheating. The means of such functional fa?ade management can be special glazing, shutters, screens, curtains, the functionality of which is changed by applying smart materials and systems that adapt to changing conditions. The main objective of COST Action TU1403 is to harmonize, share and disseminate technological knowledge on adaptive facades at a European level. This shall lead to increased knowledge sharing between European research centers and between these centers and industry, the development of novel concepts, technologies and new combinations of existing technologies for adaptive facades, as well as the development of new knowledge such as effective evaluation tools / design methods for adaptive facades.

Project funding:

COST actions

Project results:

In the course of the project, two conferences were organized for creative and innovative fa?ade design specialists and researchers. The tasks and problems of research, design and production of high-quality building enclosures were discussed. New perspectives and better insight into future developments and research in the design and engineering of advanced building envelopes were presented. Publications of conference proceedings have been published.
Two summer schools were organized, the basic knowledge, required to design an adaptive fa?ade, were presented. This knowledge was applied in workshops, where groups of students were considered to create conceptually designed adaptive facades for given boundary conditions.
8 knowledge exchange and research meetings have created a strong network between research institutions and industry. Regular meetings were one of COST’s actions to promote the exchange of researchers.
6 calls for STMS were opened. 31 young researchers used them to conduct research and practice in other scientific institutions.
