Heritage as a Conflict: the Shift Between Modernist and After-Modernist Concepts of Heritage in Lithuania (Heritage as a Conflict)

Project no.: MIP-028/2015

Project description:

Heritage protection is one of the most important and however at the same time controversial parts of culture. The impact of inheritance process, which is based on humanitarian values (historical, artistic, memorial, etc. value) on the daily economic and social processes, inevitably predetermines political, economic and cultural conflicts. Expectations based on variety of social partner’s manifests as collisions which is traditionally being understood as dissonant nature of heritage. These processes are particularly increased in recent decades together with unprecedented expansion of the field (industrial, 20th c. heritage). This is precisely the objective of this project.

Project funding:

Projects funded by the Research Council of Lithuania (RCL), Projects carried out by researchers’ teams

Project results:

A monograph will be prepared on the transformation of Lithuanian heritage ideologies in the light of the change of the international paradigm from modernist to post-modernist. The monograph will explore this broad theme by analysing heritage and its conservation processes as a conflict zone. In this way, the dissonant nature of heritage will become a kind of theoretical key that will allow us to look at heritage protection as a specific social phenomenon.
